Japan - Nov 2017
Welcome to Japan
In November we had the chance to visit Michael and Yuka in Japan. Together they created an amazing and varied itinerary which allowed us to taste the many different flavors of this remarkable country.
We began with a breathtaking 2-day hike on the Kumano Kodo trail. This route dates back more than a thousand years when imperials and aristocrats took journeyed to the major Buddhist/Shinto shrines. It's one of only two pilgrimages in the world registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kumano Kodo is considered by some to be one of the world's top nature hikes. We did high-intensity trekking for 8-9 hours a day. Way worth it with amazing scenery enveloped by nature in a perfect climate.
Michele and I then ferried to Naoshima and Toshima, two fishing enclaves off the southern coast of Japan, which have been transformed into magnificent art islands with underground galleries, futuristic architecture, and striking installations set in nature. It was a taste of the Mediterranean in Asia. Along with the art, we ate clementines and persimmons right off the trees and sampled fresh olives from the vines.
A brief stop in Kyoto for magnificent foliage surrounding the heavenly temples and then we rejoined Mike and Yuka in Tokyo to visit many of its eclectic neighborhoods while sampling the diverse food options. The Japanese take pride in everything they do and this especially applies to food preparation.
Japan is truly timeless, a place where ancient traditions are fused with modern life as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
During our visit we experienced all facets of Micheal’s fabulous life in Japan. After viewing these images and the slideshow you may understand our concern that Mikey may never move home again 😢.
Come see for yourself. . . .
